Analyse product and determine machine settings

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to identify and specify product and material characteristics and to specify machine settings and modifications for product change.

Application

This unit applies to examining sample material and product characteristics and determining required machine settings or modifications.

Discretion and judgment may be required, for both self and others, in planning and selecting processes, procedures or outcomes.

Products and materials include those typically used within each sector of the Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Allied industry sectors.

Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities.

The unit is applied according to OHS and workplace practices of the enterprise, which may include:

requirements prescribed by legislation, awards, agreements and conditions of employment

standard operating procedures

work instructions

oral, written and visual communication

quality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output

housekeeping

tasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control and recycling

This unit requires the application of skills associated with communication to interpret apply and document technical information and perform calculations. This unit also requires a problem solving and planning and organising skills to determine appropriate settings to achieve specified outcomes.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

1 Analyse product

1.1 Pattern or product specifications are analysed

1.2 Measuring or testing equipment is prepared and used as required to identify characteristics or specifications of product and material

1.3 Product and material specifications are analysed to determine production parameters

2 Analyse machine requirements

2.1 Machine requirements and limitations are determined relative to required specifications

2.2 OHS practices associated with machine specifications are determined

2.3 Product and material specifications are translated into machine settings and configurations

3 Specify machine settings and modifications

3.1 Modification requirements are established and approved, where required, to meet specified outcomes

3.2 Modifications or adaptations are assessed in accordance with relevant procedures and specifications

3.3 Machine modifications are evaluated and results confirmed against requirements

3.4 Machine settings and modifications are checked against specification prior to machine setting

3.5 Machine settings and modifications are recorded and communicated to appropriate team members
